MyChristmasNow that Thanksgiving is over, it’s time to bring out the Christmas apps. A lot of the features in this app are basically apps within the app. There are a few countdowns, the eBook “A Christmas Carol”, music & lyrics, games and entertainment. Most are pretty simple but built well with nice design. Continue reading »

Happy Thanksgiving Happy Thanksgiving from everyone here at AppleiPhoneSchool.com! We hope everyone has a great day full of relaxation and time spent with family! Doug and I traveled all last night and are spending today with family! YAY!

Side Note: Doug broke his iPhone while we were traveling last night (updating Installer…do not ask me why he updated Installer!!) and had to restore to firmware 2.2 with no computer to sync with iTunes (we brought my laptop). So, his iPhone isn’t jailbroke and he is feeling very sad!

Apple iPhone SchoolAlthough this was recorded in HD, it has been resized and compressed to make it a smaller file size. The file is still large because of the length of the recording. If none of those excuses are acceptable, I blame it on a PC. Someday I will have a mac…

Black Mamba Racer The fella’s over at StarByte are proud to present Black Mamba Racer! This game is a pretty challenging game about racing in teeny cars amongst many different race tracks. When you first open the app, it asks for your name. This will be your profile name throughout the whole game however, you can change it in the Options menu. Once you enter a name, it takes you to the main menu where you can select from; Play, Options, or Help. Help will bring you to a screen where the Black Mamba Racer gives you a few tips on how to play, and strategies on how to win. Options brings up the normal options, such as Game Volume, Name Change, and others. Play will bring up the level select screen. Levels are set up in 2 races. The first is a time trial to see if you can complete the track in the allotted time. The second one is where you actually race against 4 other drones (Blue one is the toughest opponent, then Green, then Yellow, and White is not so good ;) ). Continue reading »

WinterBoard There are a couple new theme options available in Cydia. One really interesting new theme is called Styld (via iSpazio). It is actually a very unique theme and does a fair amount of modding. The only catch is that in order for the theme to look aesthetically pleasing, you may need to rearrange your icons. Which usually makes me confused because I have mine memorized so, I go to hit Photos and I end up in Mail or something like that. But, if you don’t mind rearranging…it is a pretty cool theme. If you are looking for a color scheme theme, you might want to check out My Orange Theme (via iSpazio). Screenshots below!

AiS Time for a new poll. The last poll was - How many pages do you use for organizing applications on your iPhone or iPod Touch? Below are the results based on when we added the poll a week ago.

* One (1%, 15 Votes)
* Two (6%, 94 Votes)
* Three (15%, 242 Votes)
* Four (18%, 282 Votes)
* Five (15%, 241 Votes)
* Six (7%, 119 Votes)
* Seven (6%, 100 Votes)
* Eight (4%, 57 Votes)
* Nine (7%, 120 Votes)
* I use the Categories application to organize my apps! (16%, 251 Votes)
* WHAT organize…who organizes their applications!?!? (5%, 83 Votes)
Total Voters: 1,604

I am totally with the 16% that use Categories to organize their applications! Though, it does seem to get pretty messy before I break down and start putting apps in their correct folders. I guess that is what happens when you download and test a ton of apps…things get messy! Doug uses Categories on his iPhone too. You can still vote on this Poll in our Poll Archive page. You can also vote/view all the past polls on the Poll Archive page as well. Below is the new poll.

Street View Enabler One of the coolest new features of firmware 2.2 is Google Street View. Well, as many of you already know, the iPod Touch did not receive this new feature with the update. Though, I did hear that the iPod Touch got a nice processor increase making it faster than the iPhone! Very cool! Anyway, no need to sulk over not having Street View on your iPod Touch any longer! Last night, Street View Enabler showed up in Cydia. It seems that if you are on firmware 2.2 (BE SURE YOU ARE ON FIRMWARE 2.2, or newer, BEFORE INSTALLING!!) you can install Street View Enabler and join in the fun. If you gave it a try, let me know in the comments how it is working for you.

Apple I’m sure many of you keep finding new features of firmware 2.2 as you use it more and more. There are actually quite a few nice new features! One feature that was brought to my attention is that you can now take screenshots of the lock screen with firmware 2.2! You could already take a screenshots of your iPhone or iPod Touch’s screen by hitting the Lock button and the Home button at the same time. However, this feature did not work smoothly on the lock screen. Well, it seems Apple has taken pity on us and made this feature work on the lock screen as well. Which means, no more trying to trick your lock screen into getting a screenshot or using lengthy processes to get a screenshot of your lock screen.

WinterBoard Below are a few WinterBoard mods that are available in Cydia. The theme, Tinker Bell (via BigBoss), changes just the basic icons and also adds a wallpaper to the Tinker Bell wallpaper to the lock screen. There is also a nice SMS mod called Winter Night SMS (via BigBoss). If you are starting to winter/Holiday itch…you might want to check out this SMS theme. Speaking of holidays…the last mod is Christmas Ringtones (via BigBoss). If you install Christmas Ringtones it will add three ringtones (Holly Jolly Christmas, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch) in with your stock ringtones. This is a very easy way to add ringtones to your iPhone! Holly Jolly Christmas and Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer are the traditional renditions of the song and have great audio quality. You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch does not work (at least I can’t get it to).

pleasefixtheiphone.comEven thought I think that the iPhone is the best, I still have things I want fixed. Especially things that just should have always been there like video, MMS, every app in landscape, copy & paste, etc. Well now there is a list of all these “fixes” on a website called “Please Fix the iPhone“. There are both a desktop version and an iPhone version (auto adapts). It’s a huge list with almost 2,000 fixes being wished for. There’s also a list of “Already Fixed.” You can sort though them all sorts of ways and even search the list. Finally, and most importantly you can add your own item to the wish list. Here is a list of the top ten wishes at the time of writing this article. Continue reading »

WinterBoard Below are a few WinterBoard mods that have come out recently. There are two themes; My Pink Theme (via iSpazio) and Unreal (via BigBoss). The other mod is a clear lockscreen mod titled Best Clear Lockscreen (via BigBoss). This will make your slider background, keypad background and clock background transparent. It looks really nice if you also have a transparent theme on your iPhone. I’m all about transparent themes though lately I have been very satisfied with the Smoog theme and have been keeping it around. What I would really like is a nice rustic brown theme (I’m feeling winterish). I thought I was going to get that with the FootLight theme (via BigBoss) but, it only modded a few icons and I only really liked the Wallpaper and the Safari, iPod, Settings and Camera icons. All of these mods are activate via WinterBoard. Check out the screenshots below.

SantaLiveNow here’s an interesting story. In the past I wrote about developers using certain application title tactics to get to the top of the application list giving their app more publicity. This was fixed when Apple quickly implemented a new listing strategy. We have also talked about how developers have had friends or employees write reviews on their applications, giving them a high star rating, making the application look worth the money. This was fixed when Apple created a new policy that required users to purchase an application before leaving a comments. Well, it seems that some developers (probably more than Apple would like to admit) have found ways around this as well.
